Plans have been made by the Department of Transport, that by 2028 all new cars sold in the UK will be fully electric, this will ensure the prices for electric vehicles (EVs) drop dramatically. This will be good news for car buyers concerned about the current cost of brand-new electric cars.
Additional proposals have been made for the Department of Transport to set targets for 22% of cars sold off the forecourts to be fully electric from 2024, with an increase to 52% of all cars by the year 2028. In addition to this, targets have also been set for vans, which will be 8% in 2024 and rise to 34% in 2028.
Prices are dropping
Because the electric car market is growing, electric vehicle prices are already starting to drop. This is mainly thanks to cheaper batteries and ever-increasing efficiency in vehicle manufacturing. What will make an even bigger impact on reduced prices will be the targets set for emission-free cars are mandatory.
As it’s already a very competitive market, electric vehicle manufacturers will be offering amazing deals and packages to ensure they are offering customers the best value for money on the (EV) road. This mandate is designed to increase the shift away from the reliance on fossil fuel cars like petrol and diesel cars. These will cease being sold by 2030.
The war in Ukraine
The Department of Transport said in a recent statement that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has shown the world especially Europe and the UK that the breakaway from fossil fuels is paramount because the sanctions and backlash have made the UK susceptible to “geopolitical issues,” so it’s even more vital that changes to the way we adapt to electric vehicles need to be made sooner rather than later.
Another prominent voice in the car manufacturing sector is the Industry body of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) warned that it “must encourage consumers to purchase, not just compel manufacturers to produce”.
The Department of Transport also plans to increase the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging points to over 300,000 by 2030. This will make charging points available five times the number of fossil fuel stations throughout the UK.
Things to bear in mind about electric vehicles
Another piece of good news to consider is electric vehicles are far cheaper to run than combustion engine vehicles even though they are currently priced higher, the savings you make on running costs will balance it out with approximately three to four years, but this will depend on the make, model, and mileage.
The final piece of good news is, that used electric cars, and used hybrid cars are readily available to purchase at a much cheaper price than having to buy a brand new EV or brand new fossil fuel car. Anyone who purchases a used hybrid car or a fully electric used car will see the benefits straight away when it comes to Ulez and Congestion charge zones.
