From the 1st of September, new rules will be introduced to help protect road users, mainly cyclists and pedestrians. The rules, in general, will have an effect on all motorists, so everyone needs to be aware of the new changes, going forward.
There’s a new rule change, especially for phone users;
Mobile Phones
As of the 1st of September, it will be illegal for motorists in the UK to use their mobiles at any time during a journey. Previously, drivers could use their mobile phones for purposes that were not considered “interactive communications” such as searching for music or texting use.
The law has now been updated to fine anyone caught using their phone for any reason a total of £200 and six points on their licence. And if the offending driver has only passed their test within two years, they could lose their licence completely whilst using their mobile phone.
Transporting goods to Europe
All motorists will now need a licence to carry goods or people that are for hire or reward, such as shared-cost group minibus trips into the EU or Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein. The standard international goods vehicle licence will now be required for light goods vehicles, vans and cars/vans towing trailers.
Speed Limiters
A new law will be introduced to install all new cars with speed limiters, which will cap vehicles’ top speeds. The European Commission proposed these changes in the General Safety Regulation which was passed into law by the European Parliament in 2019. Even after Brexit, the UK is still likely to follow the same rules and regulations set by the EU.
Low Emission Zones (LEZ)
Low-emission zones are emerging in more towns and cities across Europe in an attempt to lower dangerous levels of emissions. Places like Brighton, Birmingham and London already operate LEZ zones where fines are issued to drivers who enter the zones without paying for a licence to enter.
For many, these changes won’t have that much of an impact but mainly affect brand-new car buyers and people travelling over to some European countries. To see the new rules, click here to go to the government website and make sure you are driving within the new laws.
