UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has recently announced that all new-build homes will be required to have Electric Vehicle charging stations installed from 2022. This has come about with the government banning the sale of petrol and diesel cars and vans by the year 2030. Hybrids will be available for sale until 2035.
These plans are all part of the government’s strategy to reduce emissions and show the world by example what can be achieved by making drastic changes in order to save the planet. Also included with new build projects, will be buildings that have “major renovations” and such projects will be required to make the additional EV charging station fittings as well. These will be only required by properties with over 10 parking spaces.
The electric vehicles that will have the capability to use the charging points are as follows; Tesla Model 3, Fiat 500 EV, and the Skoda Enyaq. Also includes the following hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), like the Mercedes E300e, the BMW 330 E series, and the VW Golf eHybrid.
The new announcement at the CBI
Prime Minister Johnson’s announcement to the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) annual conference, stated that “we will require new homes and buildings to have EV charging stations, with another 145,000 charging points to be installed thanks to these regulations.”
Most electric vehicles are designed to access a normal home wall plug but the process is very time-consuming. Leading breakdown recovery company, the RAC has stated it’s “by far” a better option to have a dedicated charger. Anyone looking to install a dedicated charging point will be expected to pay around £800, but government grants may be made available with the right criteria.
Electric Cars and hybrids are the way to go
There is no doubt that changes in the way we drive our cars are coming and it won’t be long until we’ll be ceasing to compare engine sizes instead we’ll be comparing charging times and the range of how far our cars will go once fully charged.
As the time draws nearer to the nationwide ban on fossil fuel cars, there will be an inevitable rush for electric and hybrid vehicles, so this could mean price increases and lack of availability too.
Be prepared because it’s happening
The car industry is having a dramatic transition which is slowly but surely changing the way we buy and drive our cars. Most drivers who live in major cities where ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) is in place or being introduced are switching to either ULEZ compliant or hybrids, and electric vehicles. The current trend at this time due to shortages of vital components for new cars is to look at quality used cars around five years old or less. This way they will either fall under ULEZ compliance or are fully electric vehicles.
