Munro was established in 2021 as a car manufacturer specialising in building electric vehicles (EVS) for mining companies, tree surgeons, quarriers, search and rescue teams, and other sectors in the heavy-duty industry.
The company was formed by Russ Peterson and Ross Anderson who had the vision to create practical EVs that would be built for various tasks in the electric vehicle automotive industry.
Russ Peterson has stated recently; “The Munro is a vehicle you can rely on, the most valuable tool at your disposal for any job. You can get into with muddy boots, two a mini-digger or throw a bale of hay in the back to feed the horses, then drive home”.
First-year targets
The ultimate goal for Munro Vehicles is to bring mass production back to Scotland for the first time since the 80s and the plan will be through electric 4×4 vehicles. The first year of production goal is to produce approximately 50 hand-built cars in East Kilbride before the EV manufacturer moves to a purpose-built factory just outside Glasgow. The vehicle production will ramp up to 250 units in 2024 and then look to finally achieve 2,500 EVs a year by 2027. The other good news is that Munro’s plan will be to bring around 300 jobs to Scotland, as it has already received orders from around the globe.
The Munro MK_1
It’s planned for now that the Munro MK_1 will be the first car to be built at scale in Scotland for over 30 years. The all-electric car is designed to run up to 16 hours on just a single battery charge. For a newly developed electric car, Munro is entering the EV sector and will be a great potential frontrunner to take on the most challenging competitors.
How the concept was created
It all started on a camping trip in the Highlands when the car Russell Peterson and Ross Anderson were driving, was struggling to cope with steep climbs and down-hill slopes. This problem then made the two aware that there was a gap in the market for an electric car with four-wheel drive that could be designed and built as a 4×4 workhorse.
The vision they both created was to build a multi-purpose, go-anywhere, off-roader using the same concept as a typical 4×4 pick-up truck.
Munro Vehicles was formed in 2019 with private funding from both Russell Peterson and Ross Anderson and once they realised the full potential of their creation, the business then went on to seek further funding through a London-based company called Elbow Beach Capital.
The used electric car and used hybrid era is born
As with all newly developed new cars, the prices can be quite steep, especially for the new concepts in the EV industry. The safest option is to look for a nearly new used car option. Buying used cars, such as a used electric car or used hybrid car gives you the peace of mind that you are getting better overall value for money, as the big devaluation normally occurs as soon the brand new car is driven off the car showroom forecourt.
