With the UK Government’s plans to ban the sale of new petrol cars, diesel cars, and vans by the year 2030, more and more county councils like Gloucestershire County Council are increasing the rollout of on-street charging points throughout their counties.
Plans are now in place in Gloucestershire to install 1,000 on-street vehicle charging points over the next three years, in order to meet the demand in the increasing surge of electric vehicle purchases. The council aims to prioritise access to charging points for around one-third of residents who do not have off-street parking.
The initial first phase will be to focus on urban areas and residents are being asked to give their opinions on where they think the best locations should be for installing electric charging points. This gives councils like Gloucestershire an idea of how to map demand for electric vehicle charging points.
Financially viable?
Concerns have been raised that the scale of the number of installations required to meet the demand will not be “financially viable” as many of the local residents cannot afford such vehicles, according to council chiefs.
Chris McFarling of the Environment Scrutiny Committee spoke of the challenges that have experienced in the Forest of Dean. He went on to say that “the setup costs will not be met by the user charges for many, many years and we have to be careful that we target the user that will most likely make use of those charging points.” He added further, “be it residents, or tourists and visitors who support the tourist economy in the Forest of Dean which is quite large.”
Ultra Low Emission Vehicles program manager Steve Lowe informed councillors that the used electric car market for the electric vehicles market will be the more affordable option and more drivers are expected to go down this route.
Going down the used car route
