With the ongoing pandemic crisis affecting the UK economy and GDP, the government is having to introduce road tax changes in Britain in order to help the treasury with the ever-rising national debt which is impacting the Bank of England. The good news is that fuel duty has been frozen for the tenth consecutive year in a row, which delighted many British drivers. Unfortunately, Rishi Sunak also announced a rise in road tax, so from April 2021, owning a car will now become more expensive.
New Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)
The latest rise in road tax will be falling in line with the current rate of inflation, and the rates will be based on your car’s CO2 emissions. Those new cars that emit zero grams per kilometre of CO2 will pay zero road tax. The next category, petrol and most diesel engine vehicles, which includes hybrids that emit between 1g and 50g per kilometre will see changes of £10 for the first 12 months. Those cars which emit 51g and 75g per kilometre will not have to pay any extra to the £25 they are already paying for the first 12 months.
However, cars that are emitting between 76g and 150g per kilometre of CO2 will have an increase of £5 from April, to a total of £220. As always, the more CO2 your car emits, the more road tax you’ll have to pay. To break it down more simply for you, and so you know exactly what bracket your car falls under, we have added the new UK vehicle tax rates here.
Fuel duty rises?
In the 2021 Budget, the Chancellor of the Exchequer confirmed that he will freeze fuel duty, this is the tax we pay for petrol and diesel. Amazingly this has remained at the same level of 57.95p per litre for the past 10 years.
Local clean air zone changes
The UK government is planning a number of local changes this coming year. Currently, the only Ultra-Low Emission Zone, (ULEZ) is in London and drivers pay a charge of £12.50 on top of all congestion charge fees. The plan from October 25, 2021, is to expand up to the North and South Circular roads but will not actually include them. There will also be forthcoming plans to extend the zones past London.
Additional Clean Air Zones charges will be launched in Bath and Birmingham in 2021. These charges are designed to cut down the number of road users, thus cutting down on pollution. Birmingham could see charges of up to £8 per day, amounting to £40 per week. Bristol is another city that is also under consideration for a Clean Air Zone.
