The headline can either be interpreted as good news or bad news, depending on where you are placed in the UK car industry. It’s obviously bad news for the car manufacturers and could be great news for the consumers because the harder it is to sell brand-new cars, the more likely you’ll be able to take advantage of a drop in prices and better deals overall.
January marks the 17th consecutive month of decline in output in the car manufacturing sector. The major factor causing this is the Covid virus which is finally starting to show signs of almost being under control, but still a way to go. The problem is also connected to post-Brexit trade agreements, with delays in supply chains and cuts made in the parts suppliers with numerous factory closures.
Government intervention
The upcoming UK budget presented by Chancellor Rishi Sunak will lay out measures to boost the sector by supporting competitiveness, increasing jobs, and creating an upturn in livelihoods.
Some good news for the environment is, that more than one in four cars now leaving the factories are being built to run on alternative and sustainable fuels. Vauxhall’s parent company, Stellantis is currently in talks with the UK government regarding incentives for the manufacturing of fully electric cars, which will provide jobs for at least 1,000 people. The alternative is if an agreement is not made they may choose to close the factory instead.
There are concerns in some sectors of the UK car manufacturing industry about the decision to bring forward the ban on new petrol and diesel cars to the year 2030.
A government spokesperson announced recently that it was “committed to ensuring the UK continues to be one of the best locations in the world for automotive manufacturing.”
“We’re doing all we can to protect and create jobs while securing a competitive future for the sector.”
