The city of Southampton is situated on the south coast of England in the county of Hampshire. It is approximately 15 miles (24 km) west of Portsmouth and 70 miles (110 km) southwest of London.
Southampton is also considered to be a major port for cruise and cargo ships and has been an important port for the South Coast of England during the Roman occupation of Britain which was around two thousand years ago. The port is also famous for being the departure point for the RMS Titanic. It also has a sadder story of being the home of around 500 hundred people who perished on her maiden voyage in 1912.
During the Second World War, the city of Southampton was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe causing immense damage to the city and surrounding areas. This was known as the Southampton Blitz. Southampton was a major departure point for the D-Day embarkment into Europe. In modern times, Southampton is now home to some of the world’s largest cruise ships.
The world-famous fighter plane, The Spitfire was built in the city too.
Sport
Another famous aspect of Southampton is that it’s home to Southampton Football Club who are currently competing in the English Premier League. Nicknamed “The Saints” the club is located at St Mary’s Stadium after relocating from “The Dell” which used to be their home for 103 years.
Hampshire County Cricket Club is based fairly close to the city at the Rose Bowl in the West End. Southampton also has the honour of being home to one of the largest and most highly rated hockey clubs in Hampshire.
Airport
Southampton Airport offers flights around the UK and some surrounding European countries and is connected to the city by a rail service from the airport to the city centre. There is also a frequent bus service too. Gatwick and Heathrow are linked to Southampton Airport by a regular train service and National Express coaches.
Famous people
The novelist Jane Austen lived in Southampton for quite a few years and TV personality and family favourite for decades, the great Benny Hill. More recently a singer who grew up on the Holyrood estate, Craig David. Another notable public figure, Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer as of the 13th of February 2020 was born in the City of Southampton in 1980.
