The UK government has introduced new number plate rules to help improve road safety. However, if drivers are caught breaking these new rules, they will be given fines. The fines can vary from parking on a pavement to not adhering to clean air zones. But one big factor that could hit many drivers is DVLA’s strict number plate rules, which are being introduced this year for historic vehicles.
Historic Number Plates
The most significant rule change has been for historic number plates for vehicles. Drivers are now directed to apply to the DVLA for historic plates and must register their car as a “historic vehicle” in its class. Green number plates were introduced last December, which allowed electric car owners to have additional privileges. Some additional benefits include free entry into zero-emissions zones, which is designed to encourage more drivers to make the transition from fossil fuel vehicles to electric cars.
Driving in Europe
Another major change for all car owners who want to venture into Europe is, that all vehicle drivers can no longer rely on the EU/GB number plate when driving abroad. The new law change is they must use a GB sticker and it applies to those without a flag or identification already on their cars. The claim also made by experts, is that the British Standards Institute has upgraded the technical standards for all number plates issued. This means the new number plates will be more durable and compatible with ANPR cameras(automatic number plate recognition) making it easier to pick up driving offences.
Reg plates
The experts have also added that the different shades of black lettering that create the 3D effect will no longer be road-legal. The lettering on registration plates will have to be a single shade of black and any alternative effects will be banned and made illegal. However, the new plates have been in circulation since the 1st of January 2021 but the new rule will start to be enforced from the 1st of September 2021. A statement from the DVLA read: “The agency has not seen any evidence to show that number plates displaying raised plastic, acrylic or Perspex lettering (3D/4D plates) can meet the requirements of either the current or new British Standard.”
