With the occasional outbreaks of heavy snow emerging across the country, Best Price Car Sales would like to offer some safety tips to ensure you are driving safely and aware of the law when it comes to snow and ice on your vehicle. This can also be very important in making sure you don’t invalidate your insurance claim, which may lead to hefty costs or fines.
Southampton-based Best Price Cars has laid out a few tips to ensure you stay within the law and more importantly, you stay safe on the road.
Driving with snow on the roof
To actually have snow on your car roof is in theory not breaking the law. But if such snow is deemed to have fallen onto your windscreen or another vehicle you may be liable and penalised for driving without “due consideration”. Or the more serious charge could amount to driving a motor vehicle deemed “in a dangerous condition”. Be aware, these offences may lead to a fine and a criminal record too.
Not having every window or lights cleared
Remember, every window, front and rear lights need to be clear of snow or ice before you set off in your vehicle. You even need to make sure your vehicle is fully condensation-free before driving. By not doing so, you are breaking the law and once again liable to a fine or criminal record. Your windscreen must also be de-iced on the outside and fully demisted on the inside.
And just in case you forget or didn’t know, your licence plate needs to be fully visible and free of ice and snow before driving your vehicle.
Warning
Be warned, just switching on your engine early may be the easiest and laziest way to defrost your windscreen and to make your vehicle nice and cosy inside, it can also make your insurance claim invalid, by leaving your car’s motor running unattended. This is due to a common clause in your insurance contract, all car owners have a “duty of care” for insured vehicles. If you don’t believe us, check with the AA’s insurance director, stating a large increase in vehicle thefts occurs in winter due to cars being left unattended with keys in the ignition.
Hopefully, you know all this about the law already but if you didn’t it’s good to know these points and remember to stick to the letter of the highway code and road traffic laws. Doing so makes driving in snowy and icy conditions that much better for all parties concerned.
