A new car concept has been born, created by a 103-year-old car company called Alvis. Based in Coventry, Alvis first started making cars in 1920 but stopped production in 1967, and continued to only service and repair classic vehicles.
But now the company has restarted production and has created its most iconic designs from the past from its location in Kenilworth, Warwickshire. And just for the record, the cars are not reproductions, as stated by the car company’s owner Mr. Alan Stote.
“We’ve just picked up where the last cars were made and produced – you could just say it’s a long time between orders”.
The classic car company will begin producing a limited number of its famous models as the Continuation Series, using the same designs and blueprints, plus manufacturing techniques as used on the very original cars back in the 1920s.
Some modifications to the engines have been made to the original build cars, such as adhering to the emissions criteria set by today’s government standards and the performance levels will be modernised.
Legacy Employees
Some promising prospects for apprentices who want to learn more about this classic trade. Mr., Peter Crowley, who started working as an apprentice for Alvis back in 1960, now offers advice to current and new apprentices coming to this sector. He said the rebirth was “remarkable”. He went on to say, “I’m one of the last people alive to have worked with the Alvis car production and then this job became available here and I thought ‘wow, that’s my job,“ he said.
Mr. Cowley continued to say, going back to the company 40 years on made him feel “quite emotional”.
“I was actually taking engines to pieces that I’d probably assembled back in the 60s.”
The company archives
The breakthrough came when Mr. Stote purchased the company’s archives which included hundreds of thousands of the original Alvis parts and over 50,000 designs, works drawings, technical data, and correspondence files. With all these amassed details Alvis and Mr. Stote are able to recreate history and to their surprise, there’s been good interest in the cars from the UK and Japanese customer base.
“They’re essentially people who are interested in motor cars, they like things that are individual to them and they like the involvement with the manufacturing process,” he said.
Already there’s an estimated two-year-long waiting list to take delivery of the classic range of cars with prices starting from around £300,000.
